What is Drawnalism?

Drawnalism was established as a business in 2009 by Alex Hughes and Matthew Buck, two award-winning newspaper cartoonists and industry-leading graphic art editors. They could see that while print was set to decline as a medium of communication, live events and social media were about to explode.

They could also see that this created a need for a service that could capture information in appealing, visual formats. One that could be used to capture the content of projects, speeches and presentations, create a memorable and sharable record for participants and audiences, and deliver valuable collateral for reports, online communications and social media.

Drawnalism’s very first job was to characterise social media on a very large wall at an unconference run in a disused factory. Since then, they have worked with academics to refine the way in which we capture information of different kinds; and developed additional services for the new world of digital events and conference calls.

They operate as a UK based company - Drawnalism Ltd and from January 2021 also as Drawnalism Europe Ltd, an EU registered company.

Drawnalism offer three services: In the Moment, at which Drawnalists work live and in person to create a paper or digital record of conferences and other events; On the Air, at which Drawnalists work live but from distance to create a digital record of online events and calls; and At the Studio, at which Drawnalists offer a comprehensive portfolio of video, branding, line-art, and graphic work.

Over ten years, they have worked on paper, and we have worked digitally. We have travelled to some amazing places and we have tried to save the planet by tuning-in digitally and working from distance.

But the aim has remained the same: to use drawing to tell memorable stories about the projects and events our clients run, and to make sure the people who participate in those projects or attend those events to remember those stories and share them as easily as possible.
