What is Drawnalism?

Drawnalism was established as a business in 2009 by Alex Hughes and Matthew Buck, two award-winning newspaper cartoonists and industry-leading graphic art editors. They could see that while print was set to decline as a medium of communication, live events and social media were about to explode.

They could also see that this created a need for a service that could capture information in appealing, visual formats. One that could be used to capture the content of projects, speeches and presentations, create a memorable and sharable record for participants and audiences, and deliver valuable collateral for reports, online communications and social media.

Drawnalism’s very first job was to characterise social media on a very large wall at an unconference run in a disused factory. Since then, they have worked with academics to refine the way in which we capture information of different kinds; and developed additional services for the new world of digital events and conference calls.

They operate as a UK based company - Drawnalism Ltd and from January 2021 also as Drawnalism Europe Ltd, an EU registered company.

Drawnalism offer three services: In the Moment, at which Drawnalists work live and in person to create a paper or digital record of conferences and other events; On the Air, at which Drawnalists work live but from distance to create a digital record of online events and calls; and At the Studio, at which Drawnalists offer a comprehensive portfolio of video, branding, line-art, and graphic work.

Over ten years, they have worked on paper, and we have worked digitally. We have travelled to some amazing places and we have tried to save the planet by tuning-in digitally and working from distance.

But the aim has remained the same: to use drawing to tell memorable stories about the projects and events our clients run, and to make sure the people who participate in those projects or attend those events to remember those stories and share them as easily as possible. Meet the people behind Drawnalism

About Alex Hughes

Alex Hughes lives in Birmingham and is a mathematician by training. He has been a professional cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator since 1995, and is still active in the cartooning community, drawing regularly at the Shrewsbury and Herne Bay cartoon festivals.

For Drawnalism, Alex leads on the In the Moment service. He is happy to produce ‘big board’ or even ‘big wall’ narratives of key conference presentations and audience responses. However, he is also an enthusiast for technology, so he is just as happy to capture and output work digitally.

About Matthew Buck

Matthew Buck lives in Winchester, just 80 miles from London. He trained as a journalist and production manager and has worked as a visual journalist since he started his career in the newspaper industry. He has extensive experience of producing cartoons, infographics, artwork and video for publishers.

For Drawnalism, Matthew can often be seen drawing In the Moment; but he leads the On the Air and At the Studio services. He also creates ‘animated Drawnalism’e for video and social media, to create story packages built from the ground up for social sharing.

About our Drawnalists

drawnalismRoyst.png

Alex or Matthew will lead on any booking that Drawnalism receives, but we sometimes ask associates to help us cover large events, or to support projects with a significant timespan. Many of our clients will recognise the work of Royston Robertson, who lives on the south coast and draws for a wide range of magazine and commercial customers.

For Drawnalism, Royston specialises in drawing In the Moment. He often works alongside our livebloggers to align his poster images with their words.

We also work with Andy Davey, a well-known political cartoonist, who enjoys the challenge of working live and In the Moment.

Clive Goddard at Drawnalism

Finally, we introduce Clive Goddard who in his own words, likes to take well earned naps between making drawings with jokes ( and a hard earned wisdom ) in them. This has resulted in a super smorgasbord of published work from the wonderful world of the British print media and nowadays also far beyond that.

About our writers

drawnalismAdam.png

Drawnalism is about drawing; but sometimes our customers want words as well. When that happens, we can call experienced livebloggers, journalists, and content creators for support. We work closely with Adam Tinworth, who trains student and experienced journalists in social media techniques and offers digital writing services to clients through his business, One Man and His Blog.

For Drawnalism, Adam can be found working alongside our In the Moment team to create compelling liveblogs at conferences and other events. We also work with Lyn Whitfield, an experienced project manager, journalist, editor and content creator. Lyn can advise on print and online production, marketing and PR opportunities, and create words for many different content types – including this website!
